Experience (both good and not so good) doesn’t just live in our minds. It imprints on the nervous system, often lingering beneath our awareness, until something pulls it back into the present. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk famously framed this as “the body keeps the score.” These implicit memories can trigger physical sensations or emotional flooding when a present-day cue activates them. This can be anything from a date on the calendar, a scent, or a sound. Our mind makes the connection, and our body remembers. The good news is: healing is possible.</image:caption>
